High Surface Area Metal Foams
Short Business Description:
Current designs for liquid cooling systems are bulky and energy consuming. Apheros’ metal foams offer an extremely high surface area with exceptional wetting properties and enhanced thermal exchange. These unique properties result in excellent cooling efficiency and liquid transport, which is key to improving the efficiency of climate relevant technologies such as electrification of transport and development of green hydrogen. The ETH-spinoff’s foams are customizable in shape and can be scaled to fully automated production.
By 2030, up to an estimated six percent of global energy consumption will be used for cooling electronic devices. To cope with energy shortages and reach climate goals, our society needs more efficient cooling systems. Increase in cooling efficiency can not only be used to save energy, but also to reduce transport and warehousing costs and to increase the performance of critical devices.
Apheros developed a patented production process for metal foams with an extremely high surface area and low density. These foams increase the efficiency of two key technologies in Cleantech: electronics cooling and hydrogen production. Since heat exchange occurs on the surface, this results in very effective cooling. Additionally, the microstructure of the foams provides excellent wetting (think sponge-like liquid absorption) which is crucial for liquid coolants being able to pass through. Combined, these properties create significantly enhanced liquid cooling systems compared to current designs. Applications in green hydrogen benefit from an increase in reactive sites through improved surface area, bubble transport, and high chemical purity.
Further impact is gained from reducing the weight and size of components. The ETH-spinoff’s innovative processes are highly adaptable, easily scaled, and offer customizable porosity, pore sizes, shapes and mechanical properties. Apheros is able to produce a wide range of metals and alloys, including iron, stainless steel, copper, and nickel. The basic chemical, thermal, and electrical properties of the metals are retained. Applications range from cooling to lubrication, catalysis, and energy storage, and many more to come.
Apheros is led by Dr. Julia Carpenter, co-inventor of the technology and CEO. She spearheads the startup with cofounder and CTO Dr. Gaëlle Andreatta.
