Tailored Liners for Better Fitting Prosthesis
If you ever had to wear a cast, a neck brace, crutches or any other rehabilitation device you know how unpleasant that can be. If such devices are not adapted to the morphology of the person who wears them, the friction or pressure between the skin and the device can be very painful and cause further damage. A customized fit of prosthetics and orthotics is key for the comfort of the user. In reality, 99 percent of amputees are equipped with basic, mass produced, ill fitting prosthetics. And that is because personalized products are expensive and the insurance won’t cover the costs.
MotionTech uses 3D scanning and proprietary 3D printing technologies to produce custom made, medical grade and affordable prosthetic silicone liners. The custom made silicone sleeve will perfectly redistribute the pressure across the stump and reduce friction.
„I want everybody to be able to afford great mobility equipment.“ – Kevin Mamalis
MotionTech provides orthopaedic clinics with a 3D scanner. A prosthetic technician 3D scans the limb and sends the data to Lausanne, where MotionTech produces the tailored liner within 48 hours and ships it to its destination. This novel manufacturing process replaces the current time consuming manual production method and reduces costs, which hopefully increases the number of amputees who can benefit from a tailored liner. Customization and affordability are no longer mutually exclusive.
The company was founded in 2017 by three engineers, Clément Gabry, Kevin Mamalis and Alexandre Grillon. By winning several startup competitions and with the support of different organizations, they were able to hire more talent and certify their products. The entrepreneurs see the 1.5 billion dollar prosthetic market as only one of many future applications for their technology.
