Replacing Animal Testing with Tests on Microorganisms

Testing of new substances is key to ensuring their efficacy and safety for humans and the environment. These tests are conducted on animals, which is ethically problematic, expensive and time-consuming.

EPFL spin-off Nagi Bioscience developed the first device that allows fully automated and standardized substance testing on the micro-organism C. elegans as a sustainable, ethical and cost-effective alternative to animal testing, while still providing whole-organism results.

Um die Wirksamkeit und Sicherheit neuer Substanzen für Mensch und Umwelt zu gewährleisten, müssen diese Substanzen getestet werden. Die Tests werden an Tieren durchgeführt, was ethisch problematisch, teuer und zeitaufwändig ist.

Das EPFL-Spinoff Nagi Bioscience hat das erste Gerät entwickelt, das vollautomatische und standardisierte Substanztests am Mikroorganismus C. elegans als nachhaltige, ethische und kostengünstige Alternative zu Tierversuchen ermöglicht und gleichzeitig Ergebnisse für den Gesamtorganismus liefert.

Afin de garantir l’efficacité et l’innocuité des nouvelles substances pour l’homme et l’environnement, celles-ci doivent être testées. Ces tests sont effectués sur des animaux, ce qui prend du temps, coûte cher et pose problème sur le plan éthique.

La spin-off de l’EPFL Nagi Bioscience a développé le premier appareil permettant de tester les substances de manière complètement automatique et standardisée sur le micro-organisme C.elegans. Cette alternative durable, éthique et peu coûteuse aux tests sur les animaux fournit en outre des résultats pour l’organisme dans son ensemble.
