Sensors that track healing after orthopedic surgery
Orthopedic recovery is often monitored through occasional X-rays and patient self-reports, which can detect complications too late. OrthoSens turns standard orthopedic implants into connected devices that measure healing in real time. A tiny battery-free sensor inside the implant is powered by an external wearable and streams data on load, micro-motion risk, and bone fusion to the SensApp. Surgeons and physiotherapists can track recovery through clear dashboards, while patients follow progress at home, enabling earlier interventions and reducing avoidable imaging, hospital visits, and revision surgeries.
OrthoSens is developing a way to make orthopedic recovery measurable in real time. Today, post-surgical healing is typically assessed through periodic X-rays and patient self-reports, which can leave complications undetected until a follow-up appointment. The company addresses this challenge by transforming standard orthopedic implants into connected devices that continuously provide information about the healing process.
Its technology integrates a tiny battery-free sensor into a standard implant. Powered by an external wearable, the sensor captures data on implant load, micro-motion risk, and bone fusion progress. This information is transmitted to the SensApp, where surgeons and physiotherapists can monitor recovery through dedicated dashboards and use objective data to support clinical decisions.
For patients, the system provides visibility into recovery without additional radiation exposure. Instead of relying solely on periodic imaging, patients can follow their progress from home while clinicians receive continuous information between scheduled visits. The goal is to support earlier interventions and reduce avoidable imaging, hospital visits, and revision surgeries.
A key aspect of the solution is that it does not require implanted batteries and does not change existing surgical workflows. This allows the technology to be integrated into standard orthopedic procedures while avoiding battery-related waste. The company estimates that eliminating implanted batteries could prevent more than 0.5 tons of battery waste over the coming years.
OrthoSens aims to positively impact more than 30,000 patients by 2030 through earlier detection of complications and improved recovery monitoring. The company also targets a reduction in unnecessary imaging and single-use diagnostic procedures. In parallel, it plans to build a sustainable MedTech business while creating new skilled jobs.
By combining connected implants, wearable technology, and continuous monitoring, OrthoSens is working to bring objective data into a stage of care that has traditionally relied on intermittent assessment.
Founded in December 2023, OrthoSens is led by founder and CEO Gwenael Hannema, an experienced medtech entrepreneur who has co-founded and led multiple startups. Over more than ten years in medtech venture building, he has developed business strategies within FDA and MDR regulatory frameworks, built an intellectual property portfolio as inventor of five patents, and secured CHF 2 million in funding for implantable technologies. He is joined by Dr. Oleg Kotsur, Head of R&D, who brings more than eight years of experience in medical device software and hardware development, and Hossein Talebi, an EPFL doctoral researcher leading next-generation passive sensor research.
