Early detection and targeted nutrition to combat malnutrition
Malnutrition is a widespread but often overlooked problem in healthcare: up to 30% of hospital patients and more than half of elderly people are affected, leading to serious health complications and high healthcare costs. Alpinasana addresses this challenge with a combined digital and nutritional approach. Its AI-based system analyzes meal trays in hospitals to identify patients at risk of malnutrition at an early stage. These patients can then receive specially developed medical nutrition products designed to provide balanced nutrition and encourage regular use through good taste and variety. By helping caregivers detect and address malnutrition earlier, Alpinasana aims to improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs.
Alpinasana is developing an integrated approach to detecting and treating malnutrition in healthcare settings. The company combines digital monitoring with nutritional intervention, addressing a problem that affects up to 30% of hospital patients and more than 50% of elderly people. According to the company, malnutrition causes healthcare costs of more than CHF 500 million annually in Switzerland and EUR 170 billion across Europe.
The company’s solution consists of two connected components. The first is an AI-powered monitoring system developed at ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen. Installed on a hospital kitchen conveyor belt, dual 3D cameras capture depth images of meal trays and analyzes food consumption patterns. This allows healthcare providers to identify patients at risk of malnutrition at an early stage and provides reliable data to support nutritional therapy.
The second component addresses treatment. Patients identified as being at risk receive foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) developed by Alpinasana. These nutritional products are designed to provide balanced nutrition while focusing on naturalness, variety, and taste. The aim is to improve patient compliance and encourage regular consumption without compromising nutritional value.
By combining detection and treatment in a single system, Alpinasana seeks to support caregivers in managing malnutrition more effectively. The company also aims to reduce the burden on nursing staff by providing reliable nutritional data and helping institutions monitor patients’ nutritional status more efficiently.
The solution is intended to improve patients’ quality of life while reducing healthcare costs associated with malnutrition and related complications. Over the coming years, Alpinasana plans to measure its impact through the detection rate of malnutrition in healthcare institutions, reductions in patient readmissions, healthcare cost savings, and the growth of its business and workforce.
Incorporated in June 2024, AlpinaSana is led by CEO and co-founder Robert Schreiber, whose background spans finance, entrepreneurship, and academic project management. After completing a traineeship in foreign exchange at UBS, he founded Soulbites and later worked as a project manager at both ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen. He is joined by co-founders Jotam Bergfreund (CSO), a PhD in Food and Materials Science from ETH Zurich with experience at Sensirion, and Raban Iten (CTO), a PhD in Physics and Machine Learning from ETH Zurich who previously worked at IBM and was the first employee of Sensoryx. The broader team contributes expertise in machine learning, software development, mechanical engineering, food process engineering, and nutritional science.
