Injectible Gel for Hip Bone Strength Restoration in Elderly Patients

In our aging society, fracture prevention in the elderly is an urgent topic. Hip fractures are the most costly and devastating, with a 1-year mortality of a staggering 20%. Drugs are inefficient for the hips and surgical techniques too invasive.

EPFL spinoff flowbone developed a new generation of biomaterial that can be injected into the hips in a simple ambulatory procedure to locally restore bone strength in hips before they break.

In unserer alternden Gesellschaft ist die Frakturprävention bei älteren Menschen ein dringendes Thema. Frakturen der Hüfte sind die teuersten und folgereichsten, mit einer 1-Jahres-Sterblichkeit von erschreckenden 20%. Medikamente wirken bei der Hüfte kaum und chirurgische Techniken sind invasiv.

Das EPFL-Spinoff flowbone entwickelte eine neue Generation von Biomaterialien, die ambulant in die Hüften eingespritzt werden können, um die Hüftknochenstärke lokal wiederherzustellen und Brüche zu vermeiden.

La prévention des fractures chez les personnes âgées est une question urgente dans notre société vieillissante. Les fractures de la hanche sont les plus chères et celles qui entraînent le plus de conséquences, avec un taux de mortalité alarmant de 20% à un an. Les médicaments agissent peu au niveau de la hanche et les techniques chirurgicales sont invasives.

La spin-off de l’EPFL flowbone a développé une nouvelle génération de biomatériaux pouvant être injectés dans les hanches en ambulatoire, afin de restaurer localement la solidité des os et éviter les cassures.
